Abstract: The pressures of SO3 which exist in equilibrium with ferric sulphate have been measured in the temperature range 740 to 975 K by static and dynamic techniques. The overall equilibrium may be described by the two equations Fe2(SO4)3⇌Fe2O3+ 3SO3, 2SO3⇌2SO2+ O2 The equilibrium SO3 pressures above partially sulphated samples prepared from α-Fe2O3 follow the equation log10(PSO3/N m–2)= 14.18 ± 1.39 –(0.95 ± 0.11)K//T× 104 while for partially sulphated samples prepard from γ-Fe2O3 the equation log10(PSO3/N m–2)= 13.17 ± 1.10 –(0.91 ± 0.09)K//T× 104 holds. The latter equation is in good agreement with previously published equilibrium pressure data.
