Abstract: The effect of small amounts of bromine on the hot abstraction and substitution yields from recoil tritium atoms reacting with methane are examined in the presence of neon, argon and xenon. It is concluded that bromine reduces the yield of both products by competing with the hydrocarbon for the hot atoms, and that the moderator influences the magnitude of the excitation function for HT production (through collisional dissociation of excited HT) so that the scavenger effect becomes more pronounced in the order Ne < Ar < Xe moderator.
