Proton magnetic resonance measurements have been used to justify a proposed mechanism for the interaction of water with sulphuric acid, where the molar fraction of water is y⩽ 0.5. Three different statistical states of the proton are considered, expressed by the formulae H3O+, H3O+·HSO–4 and H3O+(H2SO4). The molarities of these species are given for the stated water concentration range.en_US
