The behaviour of Fe3+ cations in HY zeolite which had been subjected to various treatments has been studied by X-ray phtoelectron spectroscopy. The self-reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ after vacuum heat-treatment and the partial reduction to Fe0 after hydrogen treatment was found in the zeolite surface layers in accordance with results of studies of the bulk zeolite. The binding energies of Fe cations were found to be close to those of the corresponding oxides.en_US
