Abstract: Motorcycle design is a study in contrast. On one hand, it is ultimate in mathematical newline reasoning i.e. engineering side of design. On the other hand it is an extension of human newline emotions in most raw form. Some people have gone to the extent of calling it not a functional newlinemode of transport but an expression of man s love for adventure. In short, design of newlinemotorcycle is as much an exercise in engineering as in interplay of emotions. Interestingly, newlinethe emotions generated by a motorcycle are essentially, products of engineering parameters. newlineThe first question that needs to be answered in this context is- how to measure, quantify and newlinequalify emotions. The answer is provided by Russel s circumplex of emotions. This newlinecircumplex expresses emotions in terms of two coordinates valence (degree of pleasantness) newlineand activation (degree of stimulation). Alternatively, aesthetics of a vehicle, as defined by the newlineemotion it generates, can be expressed in terms of polar coordinates r, and#952; on the same newlinecircumplex (which we will call emotional coordinates), where and#952; represents a particular newlineemotion and r represents intensity of that emotion. For example, and#952;=0 expresses the emotion newlineof Shringaara (love, beauty, romance) where as r=1, 2 or 3 expresses the intensity of the newlinesame emotion (in that order). newlineThis study attempts to deconstruct the motorcycle aesthetics into various engineering newlineparameters i.e. color, form, design context, unity, dynamism and graphics. By identifying the newlineprevalent emotions in context of a motorcycle, this study quantifies the emotion mix as newlineresult of the deconstructed parameters in terms of r, and#952;. The next exercise is to aggregate these newlinevalues to calculate the final emotion mix of the whole motorcycle. The basic purpose is to newlinedevise a methodology to calculate the aesthetic value of a motorcycle so that a motorcycle newlinedesign can verify the aesthetics of his design in quantitative way. The method adopted for newlinethis study is: newlinea. Determine the weightage for each design parameter through surveys. newlineb. Prepare visual engineering.
