Abstract: India contributes a major share of the total greenhouse gases on Earth. Many Indian cities are grappling with air pollution, majority of which is the result of increasing number of vehicles on roads. To contain the rising pollution, countries all over the world are working on alternative sources of energy to meet their energy demand. India out of all countries is in dire need of an intervention to reduce air pollution. Electric vehicles offer a clean alternative mobility solution and can be relatively easily introduced in the two and three wheeler market in India. The present study discusses the need for electric vehicles in India and the technologies available in the market which can be implemented in the Indian scenario. The paper also discusses about the policy decisions taken by the government and investments made by Indian automotive makers in electric vehicle segment. Finally, the paper highlights some of the barriers which are preventing or slowing the growth of electric vehicles in India.
