Abstract: Energy management system (EMS) ensures flexible, economic and optimal cooperation among distributed energy resources of the microgrid and quality power supply to the users. EMS also determines the switching of operating modes like islanded mode (ISM) to grid-connected mode (GCM) and vice versa. It manages the battery storage system's changing and discharging and operation of other dispatchable sources under defined constraints including supply control over normal load, sensitive load and transient load. This chapter presents the literature review of various energy management strategies involving energy storage in a microgrid and a case study is presented by optimizing the involved objective functions using the linear programming (LP) method for a residential microgrid. The optimal operating mode is decided on an hourly basis to get the optimal cost. MATLABĀ® simulating software is used for the study.
