dc.description.abstract Manufacturing industries play an important role in the development of any country. Sustainability has been integrated into the mission of numerous organizations and consistent efforts are observed towards their commitment to sustainability. Abundant literature is available related to economic and environmental sustainability assessment of a manufacturing industry however the social sustainability aspects have been rarely given attention. Social sustainability is qualitative and there is no standard to measure it. This paper focuses on social sustainability assessment with specific emphasis on the manufacturing industry. In this study, social sustainability indicators have been identified from available literature and from the discussion with practitioners. A survey amongst industry professionals was carried out to establish a social sustainability measurement framework. Weights for the social sustainability indicators were computed from the survey results. The mathematical model for social sustainability assessment of a manufacturing industry in context to Indian condition was developed. It was observed that the workplace condition and work environment were key parameters for job satisfaction and better performance. The framework could help the industries and practitioners to evaluate social sustainability especially in the machining industry and help improve an employer-employee relationship. en_US
