Abstract:
The hydrogen isotope fractionation of the aqueous hydroxide ion has been studied through p.m.r. measurements on lithium, sodium, and potassium hydroxide solutions in light and heavy water. The experimental results are analysed in terms of the models OH- and H3O-(HbOHe)3 for the hydroxide ion. Only for the latter model is it possible to reconcile our data with literature data and only for certain ranges of values of the fractionation constants and chemical shifts of the protons involved.
