Item Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Study of the Conformation of Macromolecules Adsorbed at the Solid/Liquid Interface(Journal of the Chemical Society : Faraday Transaction - I. The Chemical Society, London. 1974, 70 (07), 1974) Fox, Katharine K.; Robb, Ian D.; Smith, RoystonA method using e.p.r. spectroscopy has been developed for determining the ratio of the number of segments in loops to the number in trains for polymers adsorbed at the solid/liquid interface. The method can be used on a wide variety of spin-free substrates and in most solvents useful information can be obtained not only about the adsorbed polymer, but also about the influence of other molecules, such as surfactants, on it.Item Nuclear Spin-lattice Relaxation Times of Alkali Metal Counterions at Micellar Interfaces(Journal of the Chemical Society : Faraday Transaction - I. The Chemical Society, London. 1974, 70 (1-6), 1974) Robb, Ian D.; Smith, RoystonSpin lattice relaxation rates of Li+, Na+, Rb+ and Cs+ have been measured by pulsed n.m.r. in both simple electrolyte solutions and solutions containing surfactant micelles. Relaxation rates for the ions adsorbed at the micellar interface were greater than in simple electrolyte solutions the in crease being in the order Cs+> Rbl’> Na+> Li+ for alkyl sulphate micelles. Distortion of the ionic hydration layer is discussed as a possible mechanism for the changes in relaxation rates.
