Fuzzy logic based bridge management system for handheld devices
    (IEEE, 2007) Barai, Sudhir Kumar
he paper aims at presenting initial development of prototype system for bridge inspection, condition evaluation and record maintenance. The system is supposed to be accessible from handheld devices such as common mobile phones and personal digital assistants, for the system to be easily usable at a remote location too. It will also be free from the network availability constraints in case of mobile phones. In short, it will be an entirely standalone application. In the proposed system the procedure of inspection is standardized and the analysis is done qualitatively. The linguistic data is converted to mathematical format for its assessment by the use of popular fuzzy logic approach.

A Fuzzy Logic Based Approach to De-Weather Fog-Degraded Images
    (IEEE, 2009-08) Barai, Sudhir Kumar
Poor visibility in foggy weather stems from the fact that particles in atmosphere scatter and absorb light from the environment and light reflected from the objects. Mathematically, de-weathering a fog degraded image is an ill posed problem and existing approaches are of high complexity and low versatility. In this paper, a novel fuzzy logic based algorithm, to de-weather fog-degraded images, is proposed. Specifically, air-light estimation is carried out using fuzzy logic followed by color correction for enhanced visibility. Experimental results show that the algorithm works effectively for images with a sky region. Due to its low complexity compared to conventional physics based solutions, the algorithm makes real-time implementation possible on a mobile platform which is crucial from a road safety viewpoint.

    NEURO-FUZZY MODELS FOR CONSTRUCTABILITY ANALYSIS
    (ITcon, 2004-02) Barai, Sudhir Kumar
With the emergence of the new computer science areas of artificial intelligence and neural networks, researchers have applied them in the construction industry successfully. This paper presents comparative studies of two machine learning models namely backpropagation (BP) and Fuzzy ARTMAP based neuro-fuzzy models for handling qualitative fuzzy information of constructability evaluation. These models not only perform like traditional machine algorithms, but also handle missing information with better accuracy. Performance evaluation of the network has been carried out using traditional statistical tests. From the study, it was found that the Fuzzy ARTMAP model performs much better than the BP model.

Fuzzy inference driven internet based bridge management system
(Taylor & Francis, 2004-12) Barai, Sudhir Kumar
Bridges form an integral part of any country's transportation scheme, be it a railway network or a highway network. Periodic evaluation and subsequent maintenance can sometimes increase the life of a bridge to a great extent. Quantitative evaluation, however accurate, is too cumbersome, hence, in the present system the procedure of inspection is standardized and the analysis is done qualitatively. The qualitative data are converted to a mathematical format for the assessment by the use of popular Fuzzy logic approach. The whole system is based on the principle of evaluation from parts to the whole bridge structure. The method of calculation is based on Vertex method for fuzzy functions. The prototype system is the Internet based system and it can be accessed from anywhere as long as the area has the Internet access. The prototype system is an attempt in the direction of an organized and well‐documented bridge management system.
