    In this study, the host-specificity and -sensitivity of human- and bovine-specific adenoviruses (HS-AVs and BS-AVs) were evaluated by testing wastewater/fecal samples from various animal species in Southeast, Queensland, Australia. The overall specificity and sensitivity of the HS-AVs marker were 1.0 and 0.78, respectively. These figures for the BS-AVs were 1.0 and 0.73, respectively. Twenty environmental water samples were collected during wet conditions and 20 samples were colleted during dry conditions from the Maroochy Coastal River and tested for the presence of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), host-specific viral markers, zoonotic bacterial and protozoan pathogens using PCR/qPCR. The concentrations of FIB in water samples collected after wet conditions were generally higher compared to dry conditions. HS-AVs was detected in 20% water samples collected during wet conditions and whereas BS-AVs was detected in both wet (i.e., 10%) and dry (i.e., 10%) conditions. Both Campylobacter jejuni mapA and Salmonella invA genes detected in 10% samples collected during dry conditions. The concentrations of Salmonella invA ranged between 3.5 × 102 and 4.3 × 102 genomic copies per 500 ml of water Giardia lamblia β-giardin gene was detected only in one sample (5%) collected during the dry conditions. Weak or significant correlations were observed between FIB with viral markers and zoonotic pathogens. However, during dry conditions, no significant correlations were observed between FIB concentrations with viral markers and zoonotic pathogens. The prevalence of HS-AVs in samples collected from the study river suggests that the quality of water is affected by human fecal pollution and as well as bovine fecal pollution. The results suggest that HS-AVs and BS-AVs detection using PCR could be a useful tool for the identification of human sourced fecal pollution in coastal waters.

    This paper presents the outcomes of a study which focused on evaluating roof surfaces as stormwater harvesting catchments. Build-up and wash-off samples were collected from model roof surfaces. The collected build-up samples were separated into fi ve different particle size ranges prior to the analysis of physico-chemical parameters. Study outcomes showed that roof surfaces are effi cient catchment surfaces for the deposition of fi ne particles which travel over long distances. Roof surfaces contribute relatively high pollutant loads to the runoff and hence signifi cantly infl uence the quality of the harvested rainwater. Pollutants associated with solids build-up on roof surfaces can vary with time, even with minimal changes to total solids load and particle size distribution. It is postulated that this variability is due to changes in distant atmospheric pollutant sources and wind patterns. The study highlighted the requirement for first flush devices to divert the highly polluted initial portion of roof runoff. Furthermore, it is highly recommended to not to harvest runoff from small intensity rainfall events since there is a high possibility that the runoff would contain a significant amount of pollutants even after the initial runoff fraction.

    Determining disaster severity through social media analysis: testing the methodology with South East Queensland Flood tweets

    Social media was underutilised in disaster management practices, as it was not seen as a real-time ground level information harvesting tool during a disaster. In recent years, with the increasing popularity and use of social media, people have started to express their views, experiences, images, and video evidences through different social media platforms. Consequently, harnessing such crowdsourced information has become an opportunity for authorities to obtain enhanced situation awareness data for efficient disaster management practices. Nonetheless, the current disaster-related Twitter analytics methods are not versatile enough to define disaster impacts levels as interpreted by the local communities. This paper contributes to the existing knowledge by applying and extending a well-established data analysis framework, and identifying highly impacted disaster areas as perceived by the local communities. For this, the study used real-time Twitter data posted during the 2010–2011 South East Queensland Floods. The findings reveal that: (a) Utilising Twitter is a promising approach to reflect citizen knowledge; (b) Tweets could be used to identify the fluctuations of disaster severity over time; (c) The spatial analysis of tweets validates the applicability of geo-located messages to demarcate highly impacted disaster zones.

    The prediction of flood damage in coastal urban areas

    The increase of impervious surfaces in the urban area triggers a flood. A flood occurs area with a dense population that will result in a lot of damage. The flood simulation itself is not adequate to calculate the flood damage, as it only shows the flood depth and extent. It needs the capability of mapping software to map the vulnerable area. Accordingly, the research study’s aim is to propose the methodology to predict the flood damage on the coastal urban area by combining the flood simulation model with GIS mapping software. MIKE FLOOD and ArcGIS were used to represent the flood simulation model and mapping software. The flood depth and inundation area were calculated with MIKE FLOOD; meanwhile, the residential house was mapped using ArcGIS. Both of MIKE FLOOD and ArcGIS were then combined to obtain the flood depth in each residential house. Moreover, to value the flood damage in monetary terms, the depth-damage curve and average house prices were applied. The result shows that the majority of the inundation caused by riverine flood and coastal area is the place where the largest inundation area occurs. As the flood appears in a residential area, the flood damage of the residential building in terms of annual average damage (AAD) was obtained with the amount of $8,716,227.67 calculated from six AEPs (50%, 20%, 10%, 5%, 2%, and 1%).

    Transformation processes of metals in urban road dust

    This book discusses the physicochemical changes (transformations) that metals deposited on urban road surfaces undergo during dry weather periods, in order to provide insights into their potential impacts on stormwater quality. Based on extensive field experiments, and laboratory and data analyses, it examines transformation characteristics of metals with respect to the particle size of road dust, antecedent dry days and land uses. Further, it proposes a new risk-assessment methodology, improving the original human health-risk indices based on the transformation characteristics and potential bioavailability of metals in order to evaluate the risks posed by metals in stormwater. This book is of interest to researchers and decision-makers developing appropriate pollution mitigation measures to enhance the quality of stormwater, targeting the effective reuse of stormwater in urban areas.

    Abundance, distribution patterns, and identification of microplastics in Brisbane River sediments, Australia

    Plastic pollutants in aquatic ecosystems have received wide attention and research endeavours since early 1970s. However, in comparison to marine environments, the occurrence of microplastics in a tidal river system remains largely unknown, especially in river sediments. Sediment samples taken from twenty-two sampling points along Brisbane River over the four different seasons revealed relatively high concentrations of microplastics in river sediments, with abundance ranging from 0.18 to 129.20 mg kg−1, or 10 to 520 items kg−1. Unfortunately, varied methods and units used for reporting do not allow the accurate comparison between related studies. The spatial distributions of microplastics hotspots indicated that microplastics abundance is distance-dominated caused by flow velocities. Lower and higher concentrations of microplastics abundance mostly occurred in dry and wet seasons, respectively. Significant temporal variations of microplastics concentrations was observed in residential and commercial areas. Polyethylene (PE), polyamide (PA) and polypropylene (PP), were the three main polymer types found in the Brisbane River sediments. Other polymer types such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were also detected. The majority of the detected microplastic particles were found to be <3 mm. This study reveals the abundance, spatial and temporal distribution patterns, and characteristics of microplastic pollutants in Brisbane River sediments, and provides systematic data for further research on microplastics in estuarine environments worldwide.

    Transformation and degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban road surfaces: Influential factors, implications and recommendations

    Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prone to post-emission transformation and degradation to yield transformed PAH products (TPPs) that are potentially more hazardous than parent PAHs. This review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the potential environmental processes of PAHs such as sorption, volatilisation, photo- and bio-transformation and degradation on road surfaces, a significant accumulation point of PAHs. The review primarily evaluates key influential factors, toxicity implications, PAHs and TPPs fate and viable options for mitigating environmental and human health impacts. Photolysis was identified as the most significant transformation and degradation process due to the light absorption capacity of most PAHs. Climate conditions, physicochemical properties of road dust (sorbent), PAHs and TPPs and the existence of heavy metals such as Fe (III) are notable underlying factors for photolysis. Available data points to the predominance of carbonyl TPPs than other products such as nitro and hydroxyl TPPs with decreasing concentration trend of 9-fluorenone > 9,10-anthraquinone > benzo[a]fluorenone on road surfaces. The review recommends conducting future investigations targeting the influential factors pertaining to the fate of road deposited PAHs and TPPs. Furthermore, development of cost and time effective modern analytical methods is needed to quantify PAHs and TPPs present in minute quantities of samples. The review also identified that the unavailability of toxicity equivalency factors (TEF) for the most critical TPPs can be addressed using quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models and bioassays simultaneously. The content of this review is significant to the future work of researchers across various fields including analytical and environmental chemistry, stormwater pollution and toxicology.

    Dataset for the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling of the toxicity equivalency factors (TEFs) of PAHs and transformed PAH products

    Sixteen significant physicochemical predictor variables for thirty PAHs and transformed PAH products (TPPs) were retrieved individually prior to collation from ChemSpider.com [1] whilst their corresponding toxicity equivalency factor (TEF) end-point was obtained from published articles by Bortey-Sam, Ikenaka [2] and Wei, Bandowe [3]. In order to achieve a 5:1 ratio of the number of observations to predictors which is vital for an effective quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modelling, factor analysis was used to reduce the data. Four fundamental predictors were obtained whilst the observations were found to cluster into two main groups of nitro-PAHs and other analytes. It is anticipated that the data presented here is highly relevant for future studies on the toxicity and health effects of the analytes in the environment. Secondly, the fate and distribution patterns of PAHs and TPPs are influenced by the parameters in the dataset. In this regard, studies on the behaviour patterns of these environmental pollutants require this information for a comprehensive evaluation and interpretation of results. Researchers across varied fields of environmental science and toxicology will find this dataset very useful.

    Surrogate measures to assess mobility of people as a resilience indicator in disaster management: an exploratory study in southeastern Sri Lanka

    Understanding social resilience can assist in the formulation of disaster management policies to help communities better prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. However, direct social resilience measurement methods such as household surveys are not always a practical option as they are a time- and resource-exhaustive process. Existing measures mainly utilize publicly available census data, which often provide a poor and outdated assessment of current social resilience status. Another limitation includes a failure to capture multiple facets of indicators that are process-oriented and dynamic in nature such as mobility of people. These challenges can be addressed by employing a surrogate approach. Surrogates are alternative measures to depict the target indicator. The surrogate approach can capture key facets of a target indicator, which can be used as potential measures for the target indicator. A framework to conceptualize the surrogate approach is presented, and operationalized using a case study approach on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka to identify surrogates to measure mobility of people as a resilience indicator. Six higher-order themes were identified as potential surrogates to measure mobility of people in a disaster context. The approach proposed to methodically identify potential surrogates and their measurement protocols can help to improve the current knowledge base and understanding of complex interrelationships of social resilience.

    Application of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model in comprehensive human health risk assessment of PAHs, and alkyl-, nitro-, carbonyl-, and hydroxyl-PAHs laden in urban road dust

    The carcinogenic human health risks (CHHR) posed by the exposure to PAHs and transformed PAH products (TPPs) are currently inconclusive due to the lack of toxicity equivalency factors (TEFs) for most TPPs although some of these pollutants are more potent carcinogens. The applicability of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model in predicting TEF of PAHs and TPPs to holistically evaluate the CHHR posed by the exposure to these pollutants in road dust from Gold Coast, Australia was examined. Statistical evaluation via ten metrics shows that partial least-squares regression (PLSR1) model has more statistical power in predicting TEF than multiple linear regression (MLR) within relevant applicability domain. For instance, the predicted residual sum of squares (PRESS) and standard deviation of error of prediction (SDEP) for PLSR is closer to zero than that of MLR. The total cancer risk estimated using the QSAR model derived TEFs and original TEFs for outliers gives a more holistic incremental lifetime cancer risk in relation to children and adults. Potential cancer risk exists for adults with this approach whereas reliance on only the originally available TEFs lead to a negligible risk diagnosis. The application of QSAR model in assessing CHHR due to PAHs and TPPs exposures is very viable.

    Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, food additive and pesticides in surface waters from three Australian east coast estuaries (Sydney, Yarra and Brisbane)

    The detection rates of pharmaceuticals (Ps), personal care products (PCPs), current-use pesticides (CUPs) and a food additive (FA) in Brisbane River estuary (Queensland), Sydney estuary (New South Wales) and the Yarra River estuary (Melbourne, Victoria) were: Ps: 16/25, 7/25 and 12/25, respectively, CUPs; 28/53, 5/53 and 23/53, respectively, PCPs: 1/3, 0/3 and, 1/3, respectively and FA; 1/1, 1/1 and 1/1, respectively. Diuron was measured in all estuarine samples, simazine, MCPA and 2,4 D were also commonly measured. Pharmaceuticals: carbamazepine, iopromide paracetamol tramadol and venlafaxine were also commonly measured across the estuaries. Generally, analytes were prominent in Brisbane River estuary, followed by Yarra River/Sydney estuary. Inputs of Ps are likely from leakages or effluents of WWTPs; CUPs are potentially from agricultural and parklands via surface run-off in Brisbane River estuary, while for Sydney and Yarra estuaries, which have separate stormwater and sewer systems, sources are likely to be ingression and leakage.
