Item From theory to practice: enhancing responsible business management through service learning(Elsevier, 2025-12) Mahesh, JayashreeSustainability education is central to cultivating ethical leadership and responsible management. Despite global frameworks such as the PRME and the SDGs, many higher education institutions struggle to meaningfully embed sustainability within curricula. This study introduces a novel, constructively aligned service-learning (SL) framework—grounded in Biggs’ theory—as a specific pedagogical innovation for responsible management education. Adopting a robust, multi-method approach—including bibliometric analysis, integrative literature review, focus groups, and a nationwide survey—this research ensures methodological rigor and triangulation. The framework promotes the development of critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills through experiential SL projects, directly aligning with the demands of sustainability-driven management education. Findings reveal key barriers—such as faculty engagement gaps, limited benchmarking, and insufficient cross-sector collaboration—hindering the scalability of SL in business education. Focus group discussions and survey validation demonstrate that structured SL initiatives enhance SDG-driven problem-solving. By aligning learning outcomes, instructional strategies, and assessment methods with PRME and SDGs, this framework advances responsible management and sustainability in higher education, offering actionable guidelines for curriculum design and policymaking. By offering a robust model for PRME signatories and other institutions, this framework shows that embedding sustainability in business education is both practical and essential for advancing responsible management.Item A comparative study of ε-constraint, lp-metric, and weighted sum multi-objective optimization methods in a circular economy(Elsevier, 2024) Kulshrestha, Rakhee; Sangwan, Kuldip SinghApproximately 74.7 Mt (Million Metric Tonnes) of e-waste is expected to be produced in 2030, and laptop e-waste is one of the major constituents of this. The goal of this paper is to develop and optimize a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) mathematical model for a laptop manufacturer in India, based on a framework that integrates secondary reuse concept associated with traditional circular economy waste avoidance strategies. The multi-objective solution techniques of ε-constraint, LP-metric, and weighted sum methods are used to optimize the circular economy model. The proposed model aids as a policy tool to decide the optimum number of inspection/collection centers, sales/distribution centers, disassembly centers, refurbishing centers, recycling centers, and their optimum locations and allocations. This study results suggest that reuse, secondary customer centers, refurbishing, and recycling of the laptops is not only economically beneficial to the organization but also environment friendly and helps to create more jobs in the rural economy.Item Evolving theories of eco-innovation: a systematic review(Elsevier, 2019-07) Hazarika, NatashaEco-innovation has become an essential entity for greening the economy. Technological innovations, institutional reforms, and change in social practices are some of the means of eco-innovation. As a result, there is a wide discourse on the many dimensions of eco-innovation since the dawn of the millennium. However, the concept of eco-innovation lacks theoretical consistency; hence, it has remained narrow and disintegrated. Therefore, this study conducts a systematic review of the articles focusing on the significance of theories in relation to the process of eco-innovation, in order to investigate the evolving theories of eco-innovation, highlight the existing research gaps, and to identify directions for potential theoretical development that would be valuable for a deeper system change. The findings show resource-based view, institutional theory, stakeholders theory, and evolutionary theory to be the most commonly used theories, along with identification of material-based enterprises as the primary sectors of implementation exhibiting a strong technological bias. The findings indicate that eco-innovations are primarily perceived from a narrow set of neo-liberal notions that although is effective for incremental improvements, lack credibility for defining the differentiated approach associated with radical eco-innovations. Accordingly, selective pressure by means of policy making process, design dynamic, and societal demand are identified as gray areas requiring greater theoretical attention. An analytical framework built on technological, institutional, organizational and social eco-innovation is represented for exploring the research areas of system change, economic sustainability, product network sustainability, and socio-technical landscape, that facilitates sustainability transition.Item Urbanization and carbon emissions: panel evidence from 68 low-income and lower-middle-income countries(Taylor & Francis, 2023-03) Hazarika, NatashaAlthough the developed world has almost completed the process of urbanization, developing countries are still rapidly urbanizing. Applying the extended stochastic regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) model for the period 2000–2019, this article is an endeavor to explore the consequences of urbanization along with gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow, trade openness, and mobile phone penetration on carbon dioxide emissions in 68 low-income and lower-middle-income countries across Asia, Africa, Middle East, and South America. Initially, the study used a panel unit root test to identify whether the variables are stationary or not. Subsequently, by using the co-integration test, a long-run association among the variables was seen. Finding a long-run relationship, the fully modified ordinary least squares method was applied to examine the impact of urbanization and other explanatory variables on carbon dioxide emissions. Results showed that urbanization followed by GDP per capita are the key promoters of CO2 emissions across all countries, whereas the direction and significance of inward FDI and trade openness varied across regions. Furthermore, it was observed that mobile phone penetration (as an indicator of information and communication technology [ICT]) has a significant and negative relationship with CO2 emissions, showing that ICT-based technologies might be the answer to decoupling economic growth from emissions growth.Item Circular economy strategies in the automotive industry: fostering social innovation for sustainable mobility(IEEE, 2024) Matai, RajeshThis study explores the relationship between "Fostering Social Innovation for Sustainable Mobility" and "Circular Economy Strategies in the Automotive Industry." Using the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method, the research assesses literature supported by eight strategy alternatives in the automotive industry. Battery Recycling & Reuse Programs emerge as a top significant strategy in the analysis, which rates the strategy alternatives and highlights the significance of circular behaviors in waste reduction. The findings also emphasize the importance of supporting socioeconomic inclusion in sustainable mobility programs. The results highlight the necessity to integrate social innovation and environmental sustainability in a balanced way to bring about transformative change in the automobile sector.Item An integrated DEA-fuzzy AHP method for prioritization of renewable energy sources in India(Springer Nature, 2025-01) Agarwal, Shivi; Mathur, TrilokAs India’s population grows and urbanization accelerates, energy demand is increasing sharply while conventional sources fall behind. To tackle energy shortages and climate change, India must prioritize renewable energy sources (RES), which offer sustainable solutions. The country is rich in RES, which can enhance fuel mix for electricity generation. This study analyzes various RES in India-solar, geothermal, hydro, biomass, wave, onshore, and offshore wind energy -using an integrated data envelopment analysis (DEA) and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (Fuzzy AHP) methodology. Four main parameters-technical, economic, environmental, and socio-political -are identified and supported by 19 criteria, with environmental parameters including both desirable and undesirable criteria. In first phase, undesirable criteria are transformed into desirable criteria using Modified Ratio model. DEA is then applied to calculate initial efficiency score of RES under each parameter category. Fuzzy AHP determines weights for each parameter. The weights and initial efficiency scores are then combined to calculate overall efficiency score and ranking of RES. Sensitivity analysis shows that results obtained from proposed methodology are significant, and robust. Offshore wind ranks highest in efficiency, followed by hydro and onshore wind, while geothermal scores lowest. This methodology could benefit developing nations and guide policymakers in adopting RES.Item Socio-economic- and Gender-based Differentials in Choice of Sustainable Mode of Transport: Evidence from Jaipur, India(Sage, 2021-03) Rao, N.V.M.Climate change, fuelled by the growing transportation sector, is a pressing global challenge. There is a need to promote such a system of transportation, which is not only efficient but also sustainable. Using descriptive statistics complemented with a logit model of choice probabilities implemented on survey data from a city in a developing country, this study aims to examine the impact ‘of different socio-economic factors on the choice of sustainable modes of transport while also highlighting how these choices are different for men and women—the group of working population, those with the highest level of education, the group which is the most socio-economically well-off and the population of men most unlikely to prefer sustainable modes of transport. The study emphasizes the need to incorporate the varying demands of different socio-economic groups while formulating transportation policies so as to hamper neither the goal of sustainability nor the goal of women empowerment.Item A Strategic Design Approach for Implementing Rainwater Management System Using an Integration of GIS and BIM Tool(CIC, 2023-02) Gupta, RajivAn increase in urbanization and uncontrolled development has resulted in a water stress situation, which necessitates the exploration of alternate water sources. Rainwater has proven to be a prominent alternate water source after being efficiently harvested. On-ground implementation of the Rainwater Harvesting System (RWHs) at a community level in urban areas has always been challenging and requires technological advancement. To facilitate the implementation of RWHs, the proposed study provides a comprehensive methodology by integrating the Geographical Information System (GIS) and the Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools. Initially, the hydro-spatial analysis was performed with a GIS tool to obtain an optimized rainstorm collection network and to aid in establishing the geometrical properties of RWHs. Further, an outcome from the analysis was utilized to develop a visualization model using the BIM tool. The proposed methodology is implemented as a case study in the municipality of Jaipur (India). The developed multidimensional BIM contributes to the sustainability of the project in terms of resources, economy, and efficiency over the life cycle. As an outcome, the proposed study provides a comprehensive methodology for effectively utilizing rainwater to cope with the growing water demand and contribute to flood mitigation in urban regions.Item Use of dfe methodologies and tools - Major barriers and challenges(ICED, 2007) Kota, SrinivasProducts make substantial impact on environment. Product to waste mass generated through out the product lifecycle can be as high as 1:20. Design for Environment (DfE) is an approach to design where all the environmental impacts of a product are considered over the entire life cycle of a product. Early stages of product development are the key for this because if we know the environmental impacts of potential designs while designing, we can make changes to these designs then and there so as to reduce their environmental impacts [1, 2]. However, unlike cost and performance, use of environmental criteria and DfE is far from part of mainstream designing [3]. Most DfE tools are conceptual in nature, and there is very little adoption of these in industry. Methods like [4] are useful for specific phases of the lifecycle of a product. Every firm needs to provide a safe working environment and reduce its ecological footprint as well as ensure returns to its investors. This calls for cross-functional integration, better decision making and performance improvement. Every stakeholder in the supply chain is responsible to ensure its’ sustainability. Several incentives can be found in adopting a sustainable supply chain management strategy. Sustainable supply chain management pushes the system towards forethought, exploration and data analysis in business so as to measure up to the expectation of customers and flourish in the long run. The focus of this study has been on why a company requires sustainable supply chain management and how it would benefit by implementing a sustainable supply chain management strategy. The core aspect was to analyze the advantages of sustainability in a supply chain and how everybody would be motivated to work towards it. Main outcome from the research is that stakeholders in different domains are more or less similar but the challenges and motivations of stakeholders are different in different domains. It is required to consider the domain specific characteristics for inclusion of sustainable supply chain in product development. A conceptual strategy is proposed to include sustainable supply chain in product development.
