The reaction of carbonyl compounds with 2-mercaptoethanol to prepare 1,3-oxathiolanes has been successfully carried out in ionic liquids using ytterbium(III) triflate as a catalyst. Yields of the products are high and the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused in this reaction.en_US
