A Mg2+ ion-based solid polymer electrolyte has been successfully prepared from polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and Mg(ClO4)2 using solution casting followed by hot pressing. Preliminary structural, thermal, electrical transport and electrochemical properties reveal interesting results. The X-ray diffraction studies reveal the composite nature of the films. Incorporation of plasticizer PEG leads to an enhancement in the ionic conductivity ~10−5 Ω−1 cm−1 (300 K) for a composition 10 Mg(ClO4)2-90(0.6PEO-0.4PEG). Impedance spectroscopy along with dc polarization methods confirms the ionic nature of films. Further, the linear sweep voltammetry exhibits potential stability of ~1.8 volts. These composites are found to be promising for solid-state battery applications. The electrochemical button type test cell prepared of the type Mg/solid polymer film/I2 exhibits a stable voltage of ~1.7 V that suggests good Mg2+ ion activity.en_US
