The changes in length of rods of kaolinite and porous glass when exposed to the vapours of H2O, CH3OH, CHCl3, and CCl4 have been studied. Differences in derived elastic moduli of the adsorbent with different adsorbates are attributed to the inappropriate application of the Gibbs adsorption equation to adsorption at the gas solid interface for prediction of magnitude of forces exerted in the adsorbent.en_US
