Item Internships and projects: policy, practices, and prognosis(Springer, 2025-07) Shukla, Tanu; Nirban, Virendra SinghIndustry-facing curricula in higher education have been the cornerstone of academic discourse for the last two decades. The focus of the discourse has been centred on the actual need for students’ immersive industry experience in the form of internships and project credits. Higher Education Institutions must converge with industrial demand to bridge the gap and prepare their students. The primary objective is to examine perspectives on institutional policy, practice, and prognosis in institutions through the views of various stakeholders with specific reference to internships, industry experience, and project credits. The second objective is to assess how these perspectives align with the NEP-2020 recommendations. A mixed-methods approach has been employed to conduct the study. The student interaction was conducted to gauge the perceived facilitation and effectiveness of the industry experience. The sample for this interaction included final-year undergraduate students. Interviews with institutional administrators and industrial professionals were conducted to get in-depth insight into the belief systems and processes of industrial experiences. The key findings include a positive outlook towards the prospective changes to the curriculum as per the demand of the industry, a favourable prognosis of the impact of internships and project credits on employment opportunities from student and industry professionals’ perspectives, and a focused outlay for industry-ready graduates to bridge the skills gap. However, there are hurdles like lack of relevant curricula, resources, skill sets, the timing of the internships, remuneration, and fewer relevant training programmes in the institutes that need to be crossed for the complete convergence of the two sectors through internships and projects.Item The Role of AI in Combating Fake News and Misinformation(Springer, 2023-03) Nirban, Virendra Singh; Shukla, TanuThe recent proliferation of social media has undoubtedly brought about many benefits, but along with it also came a serious impediment to society in the form of “fake news” which has become an eminent barrier to journalism, freedom of expression, and democracy as a whole. The study aims to understand the currently used AI techniques for detecting fake news, identify their shortcomings, and compare them with the emerging models. We compared the performance of memory-based methods (LSTM and Bi-LSTM) with traditional methods. We also compared the changes in performance after applying ensemble learning approaches. The study aimed to identify suitable models for fake news detection. This is in hopes of eventually promoting a safe and healthy environment for sharing information and content online and, in the process, helping develop strategies and techniques to curb the spread of fake news on social media.Item Evidential insights: factors affecting higher education readiness(Taylor & Francis, 2023) Shukla, Tanu; Nirban, Virendra SinghThe modern world has transformed industry-education partnerships towards skill-based contributions to society. Productivity emerges as the new indices of harnessing human potential in the current age of science and technology. This need has propelled the need for immediate transformation within the higher education system to imbibe skills and capacities in the transitioning population for preparation towards STEM-dominated higher learning programs. Contrastingly, the current evidence of preparation for higher learning is not strongly situated in the context of the Indian education system. The objective of this paper is to introduce a framework of Higher Education Readiness with the conceptualization of skills that can foster STEM learning in the transitioning young population of India. It aims to investigate the differences in the readiness ability along the demographic lines of gender and spatial reference by using the Higher Education Readiness test. Data from the district with a high literacy rate was collected to address the objectives of the study. The results demonstrate that female students compete equally with male students on performance in Higher Education Readiness abilities yet fail to pursue STEM disciplines in their higher learning programs. The paper is expected to provide the factors associated with readiness for higher education. Based on the data enabled evidence, the findings demand influential changes in the policies related to STEM education for stronger educational management at the secondary level. The findings of the study would help in the transformation of the educational management towards vocationalisation and increasing productivity levels in the learning individual.Item Probabilistic Prediction for a Start-Up Success Through Bayesian Networks-Based Machine Learning Approach(IEEE, 2024) Shukla, Tanu; Nirban, Virendra SinghEntrepreneurship propels the Indian economy forward, with the last two decades witnessing enormous growth in startup culture in India. The transformation of college campuses into hubs for entrepreneurial activities has resulted in the launch of multiple successful ventures. Over time, new startup launchpads have emerged that provide funding and growth opportunities to budding founders. Recently, an incubation program was conducted with the participation of over 2000 start-ups and the involvement of many venture capitalists and angel investors willing to invest. These startups were judged by investors on various parameters of incubation and seed funding. These parameters include scalability, employability, growth, funding, brand creation, awareness among people, marketing, etc. The selection of appropriate parameters is tedious but critical for startup growth. This study has two objectives: first, identify and establish a hierarchical ranking order of parameters that are key to success for a startup; and second, formulate a function to predict the success probability of a startup based on the correlation in these parameters. Scores will be attached to each dimension in the training data set. We create a model based on training data and perform predictive analysis using Bayesian networks to assess the probability of success for a given startup. We use Logistic regression to analyze the importance of these parameters and suggest their ranking order. This study will be advantageous to a plethora of stakeholders. Budding startups may predict roadmaps and optimize workflows. Angel investors and venture capitalists may evaluate companies they wish to invest in using the model. We modelled our study on the following parameters: Quality of the Idea, Market conditions, Strong Core Team, Market entry time, and Business model. The inferred order of the parameters is Quality of the Idea, Market entry time, Business Model, Strong Core Team, and Market conditions, respectively.Item Mathematical and Scientific Abilities of Students: A Study on Gender and Cognitive Functioning(RRIJM, 2021-01) Shukla, Tanu; Nirban, Virendra SinghThe world is currently witnessing a shift of emphasis from learning outcomes to achieving gender equality in both performance and participation in education. Existing data indicates that the expansion of equitable resources does not necessarily translate into higher enrolment rate of female students in schools. This study aims to assess the differences in cognitive functioning and learning outcomes of male and female students by using Mathematics and Science achievement test. Data from two districts of extreme nature was collected to address the objectives of the study. The results portray that despite standing low on access and enrolment, female students stand above or equal to male students on performance in Mathematics and Science abilities.Item Development of School Learning Organisation Scale and its Validation in the Indian Context(ACM Digital Library, 2021) Shukla, Tanu; Nirban, Virendra SinghTo achieve the deliverables of the 21st-century learning agendas, the education system needs to innovate itself in a multi-faceted manner, enabling schools as agents of organisational change through innovation, collaboration, empowerment and effective school functioning. A learning organisation model has been proposed based on review of articles suitable for the Indian Education System. Lack of a comprehensive tool assessing the school effectiveness and educational outcomes necessitates development and validation of school learning organisation scale for Indian setting. The current study examines the psychometrics of the school learning organisation (SLO) scale, exploratory factor analyses (EFA) revealed five factors: School Vision, Professional Development of Teachers, Embedded systems, Learning Community & Collegiality and Leadership & Technology Usage. Finally, the proposed model was examined to test its goodness of fit by applying SEM through confirmatory factor analysis.Item The Persistence of Gender-blind Phenomena in Indian Science Academia(Bepress, 2022) Shukla, Tanu; Das, Madhurima; Nirban, Virendra SinghUsing the theoretical tool of gender-blind sexism, an extension of Bonilla Silva’s (2003) color-blind racism, the current study explores the key determinants which are responsible for discrimination of women in science disciplines in Indian higher education. We argue that gender-blind sexism demonstrates how gender discrimination operates as institutional tools to discriminate between men and women in science fields. Although the science stream proclaims gender neutrality/blindness, it ultimately disfavors women over men. This study with the aid of extensive in-depth face-to-face interviews, aims to recognize the pattern accountable for women’s reduced progress in the sciences. Against the backdrop of the recently framed National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, by the Government of India, this intensive qualitative study identifies certain crucial dimensions responsible for gender discrimination and diminishing participation of females in Indian academia, especially in the sciences. With several institutional policies that have been in place to mitigate challenges in overt sexist patterns in the workplace, the analysis still confirms the existence of a perceivable organizational barrier, which hinders the rise of women faculty members. We infer that gender discrimination operates through covert mechanisms of gender-blindness and such practices are normalized institutionally as a brand-new form of sexism.Item A Machine Learning Perspective on Fake News Detection: A Comparison of Leading Technqiues(IJCISIM, 2023) Nirban, Virendra Singh; Shukla, TanuThe exponential growth of social media has yielded several advantages, but it has also brought about a major challenge in the form of “fake news”, which has become a substantial hindrance to journalism, freedom of expression, and democracy at large. The purpose of this study was to examine the current AI techniques employed for detecting fake news, determine their limitations, and compare them with the latest models. The performance of memory-based and Ensemble methods (LSTM, Bi-LSTM, BERT, Distilled BERT, XGBoost, and AdaBoost) was compared with traditional methods, and the impact of ensemble learning was evaluated. The study aimed to identify appropriate models for fake news detection in order to facilitate a secure and reliable environment for information sharing on social media and ultimately counteract the spread of false information.Item Health equity and gendered border blindness: an exploration of healthcare services at the international border in Rajasthan(Elsevier, 2024-02) Shukla, Tanu; Nirban, Virendra Singh; Das, MadhurimaCitizens' access to health care and the delivery of the healthcare services is significantly affected by the spatiality of the regions and the connectedness of the elements of the healthcare system. This network of healthcare system, region and delivery of services faces myriad challenges in the borderland geography, which is characterised by accentuated military presence, poor physical infrastructure, disinterest of habitation near the border, lack of adequate, necessary and allied services such as schools and industry, social seclusion, migration etc. All these factors amalgamate to create an effect of gender-blind phenomenon as well as border-blind phenomenon. To enumerate a few, the script enabled the idea of objects to travel without the objects: the printing machine enabled reproduction of content in huge amount while the electronic revolution defeated the notion of national and continental boundaries. The Internet explosion of the last couple of decades and the Web 2.0 phenomenon of the last five years has virtually taken the communication revolution to individual homes and offices. This phenomenon has touched and influenced many aspects of our life in a positive way. Education sector has been no different. This research paper is an attempt to identify and analyze formal and informal ways in which students and teachers use Web 2.0 technologies for academic purposes. This research study is a pilot study of graduate students for their awareness, indulgence and implications of web 2.0 technologies in academics. The objective is to identify ways in which the web 2.0 technologies can be used to supplement classroom teaching. A structured approach has been used to elicit and quantify the responses of the sample population of 100 students and teachers. Also, qualitative approach will be used to explain certain aspect of the subject at hand.
