    Soft Skills Beyond Classroom: Taking a Leaf out of Obama’s India Visit

    With the changing business environment where more emphasis is on the knowledge based economy, the employees are deliverable when they conceive the interpersonal dynamics of workplace and change, update and share themselves with fellow workers. Whether they start afresh or change a job, the fundamental issue remains the same- to learn, unlearn and relearn with the new and unseen challenges of the workplace. The present paper tries to see the flexibility and adaptation of people skills with different interpretation in light of President Barack Obama‘s India visit. If one observes closely the US President Barack Obama‘s India visit, it unfolds many smart management lessons for our hoary headed politicians, wily business czars, inquisitive media persons, and of course young executives. The Indian expedition becomes all the way more important after voters punished his democrats in mid-term elections. The setback of his party doesn‘t deter the unflinching determination of President Obama to visit India the expanding nation of 1.2 billion people, a huge and growing trading partner where US sees infinite potential. So are you ready to take couple of lessons from this exemplary voyage of people leadership and trust building, to be a knowledge worker in today's efficiency-hungry business world?

    The Preeminence of Soft Skills: Need for Sustainable Employability

    The progresses of industrialization, rapid technological developments and adaptation of sophisticated technology by industries have resulted in a mismatch between requirements of industry and the products of engineering institutions. As such the technical education has to face many challenges and the quality revolution, therefore, assumes tremendous importance in the highly competitive world. In this increasingly globalized world and the internationalized nature of the workplaces, the young engineering students of India are found short of many skills and their chief deficiencies are identified in the areas of soft skills. Over the past few years there has been a growing awareness for the need of soft skills development among the academia and the corporate. Indeed, many institutes have also introduced a component of soft skills in the curricula. But these initiatives are a proverbial drop in the ocean as the most haven't had the desired impact. One now needs to review the situation and develop strategies to overcome these problems without undermining the importance of technical skills. Thus, this paper attempts to research and identify skill sets and their right mix needed for sustainable employability of engineering graduates as the technical institutional also have to play a key role in promoting national well being and socio-economic prosperity of the country.

    Soft Skills: A Panacea for Enhancing Engineering Graduates’ Employability in IT Industry

    Information technology is always volatile as new gadgets and innovation dominate the sector’s constantly shifting environment. In such ever changing landscape, meeting the IT employers’ skills need from the current and emerging IT workers’ skills has been a serious and genuine consideration. Human Resource practitioners and employers still find the graduates lacking or mismatching relevant soft skills competencies required in their job positions. This paper is an empirical investigation to determine how accurately IT students view the soft skills necessary to be a successful IT professional, and how well their perceptions match to those soft skills actually sought in IT market. Further, this study identifies the soft skills necessary to become successful IT professionals and the most common gaps from academia’s perspective. Results from this study can be useful to employers seeking specific work (soft) skills and to students seeking to fulfill the employers’ needs.

What and how did the captain, team payers, supporting staff, selectors strategize their roles to push this ‘Team India’ a powerful one? The Team India is a saga of grit, glory and struggle combining several initiatives and touching new heights unprecedented to it. The researcher synthesizes the various contours of the world-class Team India and offers the strategic lessons that can inspire corporates, professionals and young aspirants across the fields of their choice.

    Enhancing Employability Skills of Engineering Graduates

    Engineering education demands numerous challenges in the present context due to the difficulties posed by the placement scenario. Demand for competent engineering professionals has made the selection process highly challenging giving rise to a need for comprehensive education pedagogy not just confined to inculcating hard core technical attributes but also human skills. Hence there is an urgent need to continuously upgrade the curriculum design of engineering courses so as to better equip the technical graduates with employability skills. BITS, Pilani, one of the premiere technical institutes in India has a well-designed pool of structured courses such as Business Communication, Technical communication, etc. which do incorporate modules such as Professional Presentations, Group Discussions, Interviews, etc. so as to hone the soft skills of the students. The paper attempts to deal with the experiential innovative methodology adopted in the course Business communication so as to enhance the employability skills of the Engineering students.

    Engineering education in India largely focuses on imparting knowledge in the respective technical areas. Undoubtedly, technical expertise is important for students aspiring to become successful professionals at their workplaces; however, apart from their technical expertise, they have to work with people from varied backgrounds. Hence, presentation skills, teamwork, negotiations, emotional intelligence and leadership skills are some of the soft skills required by the technocrats in their respective arenas to discharge their duties successfully. Right from the moment, they appear for the interviews, their soft skills come to the driver seat. In fact, even the hiring officials place the soft skills as a top priority for the job. Moreover, acquisition of the skill to communicate persuasively, positive attitude towards work, teamwork, etc. impart a finishing school touch to the students undergoing engineering education. The present paper discusses the multifarious soft skills the engineering students need to possess and the various ways in which these skills are imparted to them. The paper also discusses the experience of handling such courses in one of the premier institutes of India—Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (Rajasthan).
