Item India Holiday Bureau: Planning for the Tourist Season(IESE Publishing, 2013) Bindumadhavan, KrishnamurthyThe owner and chief executive officer of the India Holiday Bureau (IHB), was besieged by calls from irate travelers seeking an explanation for the poor customer service they had received. It was the peak of the tourist season in India, with international visitors pouring into the country to explore its temples, palaces, hills, beaches and wildlife reserves. IHB had accepted several online hotel-booking requests, but because the hotel did not have sufficient staff to follow through on these requests, several customers were left stranded at the airport without their promised airport transfers. Others had been forced to go without hotel rooms altogether. IHB knew that a lack of accurate forecasting and proper planning was at the root of this problem. How could the owner accurately predict the growth that would continue to overwhelm IHB unless the company prepared for it?Item New Technologies and Education: Transparent Lightboard(SSRN, 2022-02) Bindumadhavan, Krishnamurthy; Koka, Anjani SrikanthBirla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, conducts Work Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP) as a means of continuing education for employed professionals. WILP introduced the Transparent Lightboard in 2017 with the objective of enhancing student engagement. The “lightboard” is a transparent board that is placed between the instructor and the camera and enables the instructor to face the camera while delivering lectures. The instructor can note the key points, write equations, and draw relevant diagrams on the transparent whiteboard using a special neon marker. LEDs are placed along the edges of the “lightboard” such that it illuminates the board and makes the writing “pop out”, using a Physics principle called total internal reflection of light. The camera image is “flipped” using either a mirror or via technology, enabling instructors to make eye contact with students leading to a more engaging delivery. The lightboard makes it easy to demonstrate things and facilitates experiential learning. Initial feedback suggests that students like the enhanced level of interaction/ engagement with the instructor. Our study has found that there is a positive impact of the Lightboard on student engagement.
